We've been to Juneau twice, and had very different yet spectacular experiences each time. The Alaskan state capitol is not a large city by population standards, but there are so many natural wonders to see there. The city is within walking distance of the cruise port, so you really can just walk off the ship and explore the bars and restaurants in the city.

  • Eat some salmon - There is something completely different about fresh (never frozen salmon) vs. what is usually available on the mainland. Fortunately, salmon season runs late spring through fall which is when almost all the cruises are. There are numerous amazing restaurants, just do two things: check Google ratings AND walk further into the city from the dock to where the locals eat. If you're not sure, you can ask your server what salmon is in season. You won't be disappointed.

  • Alaskan Brewing Company - This was one of my favorite brewery visits of all time. You will need to Uber (10 minutes) or take mass transit here, but it is worth it. Not only is the Alaskan white one of my favorite beers, but the scenery at this brewery is amazing. Located in the mountains, you might see a Bald Eagle while sipping your beer. Reasonable prices too!

  • Alaskan weather - Alaskan summers along the Pacific ocean are typically cool but not cold. Think long pants and maybe a sweatshirt. The rainy season starts in late July (average rainfall in Juneau is about 3 inches in June vs. 9 inches in September) so plan your cruise accordingly.

Top your own Excursion: Mendenhall Glacier. This will almost certainly be offered as an excursion, but it's something you do not need to pay for. It's about a 20 minute Uber from the port, or if you're adventuresome you can take the city bus there. There's lots of nature and hiking there. The only advantage of the excursion is you may be able to walk on the glacier, but if you want to see it and experience Alaska on your own this is a great way to go.

Top Booked Excursion: Taku lodge. This excursion will fly you to a remote lodge on a small (seats about 15) plane which can take off and land from the ocean. You'll fly over the glaciers and through the mountains to the lodge. There, they feed you fresh salmon. There's also a nature trail, and you are likely to see local black bear which come to lick the grill drippings. Pro tip: The plane is so small that pilots will ask for a co-pilot who gets to sit up in the front with the best view. Be ready to volunteer for this! Shawn did, and he offered to help fly the plane since he had flight simulator experience. The pilot politely declined.

Transportation: Local buses do run fairly frequently and on time. Use Google maps for times and bus numbers. Uber is also available, but it's on the expensive side. It's possible to rent a car from the Airport which is about 10 minutes drive away from the port.

Safety: A- This is one of the safest ports you can visit. Juneau is small and safe with limited crime risks and relatively low pick pocketing. Did add the 'minus' because bears are a real thing in Alaska. Not an issue in the city, but if you're hiking you do need to be aware.

Port Rating: A - Overall this is one of the best ports we've been to with so many nature and food based things to do, and a generally safe and friendly environment.
